Royal Caribbean Utilizes StrawFish® Disposables To Sail Responsibly

StrawFish® is Helping Our Planet by Turning Marine Pollution into Disposable Solutions™

Royal Caribbean Wonder Seas ship

One of the reasons to enjoy a cruise is the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the oceans and shorelines from around the world. Royal Caribbean is one of the leading cruise companies in the world with a global fleet of sixty ships traveling to more than eight hundred destinations around the world.

These natural wonders depend on the health of the environment which is why Royal Caribbean has spent decades protecting the destinations we visit. As part of the Save the Waves recycling program, there are sustainability practices in action across their fleet of ships and private destinations to use, conserve and repurpose energy and reduce emissions, waste management and more.

Around the world, plastic pollution impacts natural habitats and wildlife, including endangered birds, sea turtles, humpback whales and more. In response, Royal Caribbean pledged to remove single-use plastics onboard its vessels back in 2018. This quest led the Royal Caribbean to evaluate several plastic alternatives, struggling to balance the economics of transitioning with guests' dining experience and sustainability impact of the alternatives.

StrawFish’s partnerships in entertainment, cruise, foodservice and hospitality has led them to align with Royal Caribbean. This relationship has enabled Royal Caribbean to remove single-use plastics such as straws, stirrers and picks by 60% and lower solid waste offloading to landfills. Over twenty-five million pieces of single-use plastics have been removed from the operation thus far.

WHY STRAWFISH®?

StrawFish® supports environmentally friendly initiatives and helps facilities transition to ASTM D5526 certified biodegradable food packaging and utensils that require no commercial composting. In fact, StrawFish® products will fully decompose in outdoor conditions making them perfect for outdoor catering, festivals, theme parks, resorts, zoos, food trucks and more.

Unlike paper straws, StrawFish® products will not break down or get soggy during use, even when served with hot beverages! They are FDA-food contact approved which means they are certified safe for humans and the environment. While they look, feel, and work just like their plastic counterparts, these allergen-free shell-based products are heat-resistant so you can feel confident serving them without melting or leaching chemicals. And StrawFish® straws can be safely disposed directly into regular trash - no need to commercially compost!
