Switching a Food Processing Line to Biodegradable Nitrile Gloves
A high-volume food line goes through thousands of disposable gloves a week. Here's how switching to SHOWA® EBT biodegradable nitrile keeps food-safe protection while cutting the long-term landfill footprint.

Overview
Food processors change gloves constantly to prevent cross-contamination, which makes disposable gloves one of their largest sources of solid waste. This application study shows how a typical mid-size processor can move to biodegradable and carbon neutral hand protection from ECO MDS without changing food-safety procedures.
The Challenge
A processing line running multiple shifts can dispose of tens of thousands of nitrile gloves every month. Conventional nitrile can take a century or more to break down in landfill. The safety and sustainability teams want to reduce that impact, but any replacement must meet the same standards.
- Gloves made with components that comply with FDA food-contact regulations (21 CFR 177.2600)
- The same fit, dexterity and barrier protection workers are used to
- Cut protection for knife-hand tasks such as deboning and trimming
- A path to lower waste in serving and packaging areas too
The goal: reduce glove-related landfill impact while keeping every food-safety requirement in place.
Implementation Highlights
- Glove usage reviewed by task and station
- Free samples trialed on the line before switching
- SHOWA® EBT nitrile replaces conventional nitrile 1-for-1
- Carbon neutral cut liners added for knife-hand tasks
- Compostable trays introduced in the break and serving areas
The Solution
-
Review usage by task
ECO MDS helps map where gloves are used, how often they're changed and which tasks need extra cut or chemical protection, so each station gets the right product.
-
Trial before you switch
Workers test SHOWA® 6112PF samples on the line. Its patented low-modulus formula is designed for bare-skin tactility, so the change feels familiar.
-
Roll out by station
Disposable gloves switch 1-for-1 to EBT nitrile. Knife-hand stations pair them with Traffi® TG710 A5 liners, and break areas move to EcoSmart® compostable trays.
The Impact
The line keeps the same glove-change routine and food-safety protection, but every glove now uses SHOWA® Eco Best Technology®, which is designed to accelerate biodegradation in landfill conditions. Cut liners add carbon neutral protection at knife stations, and compostable trays extend the program beyond the production floor.
*Per SHOWA® testing of EBT nitrile gloves under the ASTM D5511 accelerated landfill standard, as stated on the product page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are biodegradable nitrile gloves safe for food handling?
Yes. SHOWA® 6112PF gloves are made from components that comply with FDA food-contact regulations (21 CFR 177.2600) while adding Eco Best Technology® for accelerated biodegradation.
Do biodegradable gloves break down during use?
No. EBT technology only activates in the microbe-rich conditions of a landfill, so the gloves perform like standard nitrile while you wear them.
